Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament believes that candidates for membership in the EU must continue reforms, in particular - Turkey. This question in three resolutions, approved today at a meeting of the Committee on progress in 2009, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey.

The resolution on the progress of Croatia, the MPs expressed the view that negotiations on accession to the EU could be completed in 2010, which, in turn, will give a positive impetus to the process of integration of other Western Balkan countries.

However, MPs said that Croatia should strengthen the system of public administration, to continue the judicial reform, strengthen the fight against corruption and organized crime and ensure the return of refugees.

MPs expect the full cooperation of Croatia with the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and providing access to all necessary materials in the process.

Members noted the progress of Croatia in the path of reform, while at the same time expressed concern about the decrease in support for EU accession among the population.

resolution regarding the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia MPs expressed the hope that negotiations with the country"s EU membership will begin in the near future and asked the European Council summit in March this year to adopt the recommendations of the European Commission relative to the start of such negotiations.

However, members of the Committee believe that Macedonia should continue to reform public administration, judiciary, fight corruption, improve the rights of women and ethnic relations.

MPs also called on the government of Macedonia and Greece to redouble efforts to address the issue regarding the name of the country. The deputies believe that the EU should be ready to help in the negotiation process.

resolution on Turkey"s deputy noted that progress in specific reforms in 2009, remains limited. Thus, members expressed regret that Turkey has for four consecutive years may not ratify the Additional Protocol to the Association Agreement between Turkey and the EU, as well as the decision of the Constitutional Court of Turkey to close the Democratic Society Party.

In addition, the MPs said that Turkey should improve the legislation in the field of women"s rights, discrimination, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, the fight against corruption and "zero tolerance" for torture.

Committee members also expressed the belief that Turkey should make efforts in order to meet the Copenhagen criteria. The Turkish government, according to the resolution, should contribute to concrete steps to address Cyprus.
